The Complete Gusto Integration Guide

Gusto makes payroll and onboarding feel effortless for growing companies. Benefits should keep that same rhythm. When coverage changes have to be retyped from Gusto into carrier portals, the small mistakes, a wrong tier, a late termination, a deduction that does not match, are the ones that surface weeks later as billing headaches.

Connecting Gusto to Benefit Cloud automates that handoff. Employee and payroll data moves straight to your benefits ecosystem, carrier feeds stay current, and your team stops doing the same data entry twice.

Gusto uses OAuth 2.0 for API access, which means a registered API application. Your Gusto account team or the developer portal can create one, and it produces a Client ID and Client Secret. Here is how.

Step 1: Enable API Access with Gusto

Gusto API access is managed through a partner or developer application registration. An application must be registered before credentials can be generated. If you are unsure how to proceed, your Gusto customer success manager can point you the right way.

  1. Contact your Gusto account representative or visit the Gusto developer portal.

  2. Request that an OAuth application be created or granted for the integration.

  3. Give your rep the integration name, for example Benefit Cloud Benefits Integration.

  4. Gusto provides a Client ID and Client Secret for the registered application.

Step 2: Retrieve Your Client Credentials

Once the application is registered, note the Client ID, the public identifier for the app, and the Client Secret, which you should treat like a password. Keep both somewhere secure until you submit them.

Step 3: Submit Your Credentials to Benefit Cloud

Submit the Client ID and Client Secret through the secure Benefit Cloud portal, where they are encrypted immediately. Benefit Cloud uses the Gusto API in read-only mode to retrieve employee and payroll data for benefits processing. We do not write back to Gusto, alter payroll records, or access financial accounts.

What Happens Next

Benefit Cloud tests the connection, maps your data to your feed requirements, and confirms once the integration is live. Your data then syncs automatically going forward.
